Chinese media explains why India performs poorly at Olympics

By Newsd
Updated on :

After two days of ruckus over Shobha De’s insensitive tweet about Indian athletes as how sending athletes to Olympics is west of money, we all are no done with slamming Shobha De.

Shall we now look at ourselves critically and try to access why we perform poorly at Olympics? Well, it seems like our neighbour China cares for us and has been closely looking at what’s wrong with India. Hindustan Times has reported how many Chinese news websites are interpreting why India lacks behind in every Olympics.

Let’s take a look at what they have to say.

Toutiao.com

The website rightly points out that despite having such a huge population of 120 crores; India ranks the last in Olympic medal number. India got only six medals in the 2012 Olympics, while none were gold.

The website says, “India has 1,200,000,000 people, and is the second populous country following China. But India’s getting scarce medals in the Olympic Games. Why? Counting the recent three (2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing, 2012 London) Olympics, if the medals were given equally to the whole population, India ranks last.”

It says that gap between rich and poor in India has made it hard for the poor people even to make a living, let along saving the energy for sports practice. It adds that the government has only little investment on the sports infrastructure, the mass sports and competitive sports are both lagging behind in India.

Chinanews.com

Chinanews.com has more deep analysis to offer and blames Indian caste system for being a hindrance in offering quality education and sufficient nutrition to children.

The website also points out apathy of Indians towards sports other than cricket and adds, “The Indian culture has hindered local sports development. Most families want their children to become doctors or accountants. Sports talents would be persuaded by family and even neighbours, stopping them from taking part in high-level competitions.”
