CJI bench ordered Rajeev Kumar to make himself available for probe: Nalin Kohli

Senior lawyer Nalin Kohli talks to the media outside the court. “The CJI bench ordered that Rajeev Kumar would make himself available in the light of prayer of the application of CBI to join the investigation, make himself available and cooperate fully. The SC pointed out that no coercive steps would be taken,” says Kohli.

“It has also been made clear by the SC in its order that personal appearance, after the filing of replies, of concerned officers may be required and it’ll be communicated by Secretary General of the SC on February 19, if such appearance is required on February 20.”

The Supreme Court issues notice to Commissioner of Police Kolkata, DGP and the West Bengal government on the contempt plea. “Replies in a contempt petition filed by CBI has to be placed by West Bengal chief secretary, DGP on or before February 18,” says the SC.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared for Kolkata Police chief Rajeev Kumar in the Supreme Court, alleges that the CBI’s action was meant to score points. “It’s an attempt to humiliate and score point. What’s the great urgency? For five years, there was no FIR. There is not a single FIR against Rajeev Kumar under Section 201 (Destruction of evidence) of the IPC.”
