The USMNT won $1 million in prize money for beating Canada in the 2023 final nine months ago. This year, CONCACAF will not award money to the winners of the competition.
In spite of the lack of a winners’ cheque, Mexico’s focus is on reclaiming their title as CONCACAF’s top dogs. Mexico has lost six matches against its North American archrivals. On the other hand, the US wants to retain their bragging rights over their neighbors – and remain the only country to win the Nations League.
“These matches are always dogfights,” USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams told reporters ahead of this weekend’s final. We’re always familiar with many of the players on Mexico, so that makes it a little bit more of a rivalry. We know how good they are, we know how great we are.
“We know the talk and chatter behind who’s going to be the best team North America and obviously we want to continue to represent that – and, yeah, defend our title.”

How long has it been since Mexico and the USMNT met?
Despite a fiery encounter marred by altercations between players and disrespectful behavior by Mexican fans in June 2023, the USMNT and Mexico will meet for the first time tonight.
Four players were sent off in a game won 3-0 by the Stars and Stripes – César Montes and Gerardo Arteaga for Mexico, Weston McKennie and Sergio Dest for the US, and referee Iván Barton blew full time six minutes early after El Tri supporters ignored warnings to cease singing homophobic chants.
