Senior Congress leader Mallikarujun Kharge has landed himself in trouble by making remarks on Assam’s legendary singer-composer Bhupen Hazarika.

Kharge had slammed the Centre for not giving Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, to spiritual leader Shivakumara Swami, the Lingayat seer who died recently and instead choosing singer Hazarika and member of RSS, Nanaji Deshmukh for the award in an indirect statement.

He said “The government had conferred the Bharat Ratna on “a singer” and “a man who propagated their RSS ideology”, in reference to Hazarika and Nanaji Deshmukh, instead of Shivakumara Swami”.

Shivakumar Swami, 111, popularly known as “walking God’’ was undergoing treatment for a lung infection and was on ventilator support. He passed away on January 21. Prime Minister Modi and other senior BJP leaders had also expressed their condolences over the loss.

“A case has been filed against Kharge at Morigaon Police Station,” Swapnanil Deka, Superintendent of Police of Morigaon district, told a news agency.

President of Sahai (a socio-cultural organisation of central Assam) and RTI activist, Raju Mahanta told that a case has been filed against him as he has hurt Assamese people and their sentiments by making such objectionable remarks. He has asked for an apology from Kharge in the Lok Sabha.

Former President Pranab Mukherjee along with Nanaji Deshmukh & Hazarika were chosen for Bharat Ratna Award by the centre.
