Congress veteran and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit is the face of Congress in Uttar Pradesh. Dikshit was on Thursday formally announced as the party’s chief ministerial candidate by Congress General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi at the party headquarters in the national capital.
Amid raging speculations of her appointment, he referred to the media hype by saying, “For the first time your assumption has proved right.”
When asked about the corruption charges that she faces, Ghulam Nabi Azad said that allegations against her did not matter as BJP’s chief ministers in other states to face such allegations. He also went ahead to say that she has been selected because of her experience and good work in the past.
This move also comes after it was being said that a “Brahmin” face was needed in the politically crucial state according to the party’s poll strategist Prashant Kishore. Dikshit who is the daughter-in-law of prominent Congress leader from Uttar Pradesh Uma Shankar Dikshit, was elated at her appointment and said it was a “big opportunity” for her. This move can be intercepted as an attempt b y the grand old party to win back its upper cast votes in the state.
Dikshit, who has been the chief minister of Delhi thrice had earlier said that she was ready for any role which the party assigns to her.
