Pema Khandu, son of former CM Dorjee Khandu, has been unanimously elected the new leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP). The governor of Arunachal Pradesh will swear in Khandu as chief minister as he has enough support to stake claim and form the government.

Former chief minister Nabam Tuki resigned as leader of the CLP earlier this morning. His resignation was accepted by governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa. Earlier, Congress spokesperson Bamang Felix said the party requested the governor not to conduct the floor test as it will elect a new CLP leader, who will have majority support to form the government.

“On the approval of the party high command, president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Ganhi, a new CLP leader has been elected. All 45 legislators supported Pema Khandu to be the new head,” Tuki said.

“We are all back in the Congress following the Supreme Court’s verdict. It is a big victory for Congress in Arunachal Pradesh,” Khandu said in an interview. He confirmed that he has the support of 45 Congress MLAs and two independents.

Minister of state of home affairs Kiren Rijiju has said the government has nothing to do with whatever is going on. “Instability was creation of the division within the Congress, BJP has nothing to do with internal matter of Congress,” he told ANI. “We just wish there is a political stability in Arunachal Pradesh, it is a sensitive and important state.”
