A day after the Supreme Court sentenced him to six months’ jail, Kolkata police have arrived in Chennai today to arrest Calcutta High Court Judge Justice C. S. Karnan.

Justice Karnan is currently in Srikalahasthi, Andhra Pradesh. He was staying at the state guest house after he arrived in Chennai on Tuesday before the Supreme Court came out with its verdict.

According to the local police sources, the Kolkata police personnel have spoken to their Tamil Nadu counterparts on executing the arrest order. Sources also quoted that the police team headed by DGP West Bengal Surajit Kar Purkayasha left to Kalahasti, escorted by Tamil Nadu Police.

According to PTI, the police had closed the main gate of the guest house to avoid any trouble, as a group of advocates protested outside the state guest house, saying that Karnan was being victimised.

It is for the first time that a sitting high court judge has been awarded a jail sentence by the apex court on charges of contempt.

A Bench, headed by Chief Justice J. S. Khehar, had also disallowed the print and electronic media from publishing or airing the contents of further orders passed by Justice Karnan.

“The sentence shall be executed and he be taken into custody forthwith,” the Bench had said.
