Coronavirus live updates: India records worst single-day coronavirus spike so far; 11,458 fresh cases reported

Coronavirus in India live updates: The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 39,980 on Sunday, including 28,046 active cases, 10,632, 1 migrated and 1,301 deaths, according to latest update by the Union Health Ministry on its website.

Commercial passenger flights at Delhi’s IGI Airport will resume operations from Terminal 3 after the lockdown is lifted, news agency PTI reported. Entry gates, self check-in machines and check-in bays will be allocated to airlines to avoid overcrowding by air travellers. It is also reported that the airport will keep all food, beverage and retail shops open to avoid overcrowding at one place and use ‘ultraviolet disinfection tunnels’ for all incoming baggage, according to a plan prepared by the GMR group-led Delhi International Airport Ltd.

In India, the lockdown was going to take an end on May 3 but it has now extended for two more weeks. Some concessions have been announced for Red, Orange, and Green Zones during this extended lockdown period.

While the government claims the lockdown significantly helped contain the virus outbreak, experts remain worried about India’s rising case count. The country has over 33,000 positive Covid-19 cases and more than 1,100 deaths. However, experts are also concerned about the economic pain caused by the lockdown, which has affected millions. Besides relaxed lockdown rules for green zones, there are talks of a massive credit relief package for small businesses.
