FLiRT are descendants of the JN. 1 variant introduced last December, according to Hindustan Times.

The Omicron JN.1 lineage is spreading rapidly across the country because of new mutations.

As of April 2024, FLiRT variant KP.2 is responsible for about 25% of new COVID-19 cases.

The new variant can cause sore throats, coughs, fatigue, nasal congestion, runny noses, headaches, muscle aches, fevers, and taste loss.

For elderly and immunocompromised individuals, influenza vaccinations, masks, and social distancing are recommended.

India’s high population density poses a significant threat to the spread of these variants.
