Costco Tariff Refund: Costco members who are waiting for a tariff refund should not expect a cash payment at this time. Costco has said it wants to return the value of any tariff money it recovers to its members. However, the company has not announced a program that would send every shopper a direct check or deposit.
The issue started after tariffs imposed during the Trump administration were challenged in court. The U.S. Supreme Court later struck down the tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Companies that paid those tariffs are now seeking refunds from the government. Costco is among the businesses that have taken legal action to recover the money.
For shoppers, there is an important difference. Businesses that were the official importers can seek the government refunds. Customers who bought products at Costco generally cannot ask the government for that money directly.

How Costco Plans to help members
Costco CEO Ron Vachris has said that any money recovered by the company is meant to benefit its members. The company has not said that it will simply divide the refund among shoppers based on how much they spent.
In March 2026, Vachris said, “When legal challenges have recovered charges passed on in some form to our members, our commitment will be to find the best way to return this value to our members through lower prices and better values.”
Costco has also explained that it did not pass every tariff cost directly to customers. The company used different methods to control the effect of tariffs. These included moving production to other countries, combining purchases to reduce costs, sourcing more goods inside the U.S. and using its Kirkland Signature brand more heavily.
Because of these steps, working out an exact refund for each customer would be very difficult. Tariff costs could differ depending on the product, supplier, country and time of purchase. Costco also said that the changing tariff rates made it hard to identify the exact effect on individual products.
Could Costco Send Direct Payments?
There is currently no announced Costco program that gives every member a direct tariff refund. The company’s stated plan is focused on returning the value through lower prices and other benefits.
That issue has already led to a proposed class-action lawsuit against Costco. The case argues that shoppers who paid higher prices because of tariffs should receive compensation if Costco later receives tariff refunds. The lawsuit says lower prices for future shoppers would not necessarily help people who already paid the higher prices.

The wider retail industry is facing the same question. Major companies have reported billions of dollars in tariff refunds. Forbes reported on August 21, 2026 that America’s biggest retailers had reported more than $5 billion in tariff refunds during that week. Many companies are considering how to use the money rather than sending it directly to individual customers.
Costco has said it will be transparent about its plans “if and when” it receives refunds. For now, members should not trust websites or social media posts asking for personal information to claim an immediate Costco tariff payment.
The clearest expectation is that any benefit could appear through lower prices and better value at Costco rather than a separate cash check.
