Flood in Bihar: More than 10 districts affected, officials on alert

Flood Alert for Bihar and UP: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has issued a flood warning for Bihar and Uttar Pradesh after water levels rose suddenly in the Gandak River system following heavy rainfall in Nepal. The commission has asked officials near the India-Nepal border and in downstream areas to remain alert and keep monitoring the situation.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the CWC said water levels had risen quickly at Arughat on Nepal’s Budhi Gandak River. Other hydrological monitoring stations in Nepal have also recorded rising water levels, raising concerns about a possible increase in the flow of rivers entering India.

Officials near the border have been placed on high alert. District administrations in areas along the Gandak River in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have also been advised to watch river conditions closely and remain prepared for any changes.

Water Inflow at Valmikinagar Barrage May Rise

The rise in water levels in Nepal could lead to a slight increase in inflow at the Gandak Barrage in Valmikinagar, located in Bihar’s West Champaran district. The barrage plays an important role in managing the flow of the Gandak River as it enters the Indian plains.

The CWC’s Flood Forecasting and Monitoring Directorate has asked the concerned departments to stay prepared for a possible emergency. Authorities are also strengthening safety measures in riverside areas, including Bagaha, where changes in river levels can affect nearby settlements.

But the commission expects the surge to weaken considerably before reaching the Indian border. Scientists believe its impact after entering India will remain limited. According to the assessment, no major threat to life or property is expected in the riverine diara areas and nearby plains.

Even then, officials are continuing to monitor the situation because water levels can change depending on rainfall and river flow in the upper catchment areas.

Which Districts in Bihar Could Face Flooding?

The Gandak River affects several districts of Bihar after entering the state. These include West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali. A rise in the river’s water level can put pressure on low-lying areas and communities living close to its banks.

The Budhi Gandak River is another major source of flooding in Bihar. It affects parts of the Champaran region as well as Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Begusarai and Khagaria.
