BACKGROUND

Ralph Dale Earnhardt Sr. was born in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on April 29, 1951. Earnhardt, the third child of Martha and Ralph, followed in his father’s 1953-established footsteps as a professional short-track driver. In order to pursue his goal of becoming a race car driver, he dropped out of school in the ninth grade and worked a variety of jobs before he ever sat in a race car.

Earnhardt made his debut as a professional driver in 1975 operating the No. 8 Dodge Charger for Ed Niegre’s team – it would be a few years before Dale adopted the iconic No. 3 -. He finished 22nd in the season’s longest race, conducted at Charlotte Motor Speedway, ahead of his future team principal Richard Childress. Earnhardt participated in eight more races before signing his first full-season contract in 1979. He won seven NASCAR titles, including six with Richard Childress Racing. He also won in 1986, 1987, 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1994, in addition to 1980. In doing so, Earnhardt tied Richard Petty for the most titles in NASCAR history, until Jimmie Johnson won his seventh championship in 2016.

Earnhardt departed for his final race on February 18, 2001, following a great season in 2000. On the final circuit of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, Earnhardt was killed in a three-car accident. However, he did not die in futility. Following the autopsy and the two investigations, it was evident that the safety protocols required revision. Since Earnhardt’s accident, there hasn’t been a racing fatality in any of NASCAR’s three national series due to the upgrade’s multiple lifesaving benefits.
