Darsha Amavasya 2025: Darsha Amavasya is that special night in Hindu tradition when the moon is not visible in the sky. It comes every month and holds deep spiritual meaning.

This day falls on the last day of Krishna Paksha, which is the dark phase of the Moon. People believe that this night is perfect to remember and honor their ancestors. It’s said that the souls of the ancestors come close to their family members on this day, giving blessings and helping clear karmic burdens.

In 2025, Darsha Amavasya will start on the evening of June 24 at 6:59 PM and will end on June 26 at 4:00 PM. But the main rituals, prayers, and fasting will happen on June 25. This is because most people follow the sunrise-based time, known as Udaya Tithi.

Why People Perform Ancestral Prayers on This Day?

Many people carry something called Pitru Dosh, which means ancestral karmic debts. They do certain pujas and rituals to find peace and remove these burdens. Offerings like water, sesame seeds, and food are given to Brahmins and sometimes to cows. These actions bring peace to the souls of ancestors and help those who are still alive find calmness and better fortune.

Here are the rituals followed on Darsha Amavasya:

• People wake up early, during Brahma Muhurta, and take a holy bath. If someone can’t go to a river, they mix Ganga Jal in their bath water.
• Clean clothes are worn, and water is offered to the Sun god with rice, red sandalwood, and flowers.
• Facing south, water is offered to ancestors three times using black sesame seeds, barley, and kusha grass while saying the names of the ancestors and one’s gotra.
• Chanting of Pitru Gayatri Mantra or other prayers related to ancestors is done during this ritual.
• The Peepal tree is worshipped by pouring water and raw milk. People walk around it seven times and light a mustard oil lamp below the tree in the evening.

At home, people clean their home temple and pray to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Devotees chant “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” while offering water to Lord Shiva with items like Bel Patra, Dhatura, and sandalwood.

People also pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Tulsi Devi. The Tulsi plant is watered, and a small lamp is placed near it. Charity is a big part of this day. People donate grains, clothes, jaggery, ghee, sweets, or anything else they can afford to the needy or Brahmins. Feeding cows with green grass is also seen as a good act. Offering black sesame seeds is believed to reduce the effect of Pitru Dosh.
