DCW issues notices to colleges for discriminatory hostel timings

At the behest of the student activist group ‘Pinjra Tod’ the Delhi Commission for Women has issued notices to seven universities and colleges to explain the reason behind different entry and exit timings to hostels for girls and boys on Thursday.

The group has been active in working equal hostel timings for both men and women  and in a statement by DCW that it issued notices and sought responses from all colleges and universities in Delhi on the same. Based on the responses prima-facie the commission found different entry and exit timings to hostels for girls and boys in seven University and Colleges and had issued notices to the principal/ registrar to explain reason for the discriminatory practice. The 7 institutions are Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Jamia Hamdard, Jamia Milia Islamia, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi Technological University and A&U Tibbia College.

The commission has also summoned the principals/ registrars of 10 universities/ colleges which have not provided any information on November 1-3, 2016. The institutions include Delhi University, St Stephen’s College, School of Planning and Architecture, Indian Institute of Mass Communication and Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Research, among others.

The 12 institutions, according the commission, which have same timings of entry and exit for girls and boys include Keshav Mahavidyalaya, Ambedkar University, National Law University, Delhi, Ramjas College, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Jawahar Lal Nehru University and National School of Drama, among others.
