According to a Hindustan Times report, Delhi Commission of Women played cupid in uniting a sex worker and her lover.
She had met him as a client in the brothel at GB Road, Delhi some time back. That one meeting changed the lives of both of them.
The man, a taxi driver, continued his meetings at the brothel and they fell in love eventually. They wanted to run away and get married. It took them two years and several failed attempts before the DCW stepped in and united them.
The woman, a 27-year-old, had been working at GB Road for a few years. She had come to India from Nepal in search of work and had landed up at GB Road.
“He (the man) visited the brothel along with a friend and met the girl. They started liking each other and eventually fell in love. He kept visiting her as a client, hoping to find a way to take her out of the brothel and marry her,” a DCW official said.
Recently, the man approached the DCW through an NGO. Upon his request, a women’s panel team along with the police rescued the girl from the brothel.
“We rescued the girl with the help of local police. The girl has expressed her desire to start her life fresh with the man. The couple has told us that the man’s family has agreed to the relationship and they will be getting married soon,” said the official.
According to DCW chairperson, Swati Maliwal, there are numerous traffickers operating in GB Road who take advantage of helpless and innocent girls and push them into prostitution. She feels that GB Road should be closed down.
Swati has conducted raids at brothels in the past and has sought demolition of illegal tehkhanas (hidden cells) operating in the area.
This couple managed to have a happy ending, while the fate of many sex workers at GB Road remains uncertain.
The wedding of this couple is likely to take place soon and they are looking forward to a happier life ahead.
