Delhi police detain teenager for hacking UPSC website

Delhi police finally get hold of a 17-year-old teenager who hacked the official website of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on September 27. The website upsc.gov.in was hacked on September 10 for few hours and as a result, the homepage started to display the image of popular cartoon character Doraemon. However, the website was restored quickly in a few hours.

According to Delhi police, the teenager is a student of some technical course in a Central University in Delhi and lives in a rented house in Jamia area in the city. His is a son of a businessman having business in abroad, however, his native place is in Uttar Pradesh.

 “The boy told police, in front of counselors, that he recently learned to hack from the internet. He had been trying to hack several government websites for the last three weeks but failed. Ultimately, he found the commission’s website was vulnerable and hacked it,” said a senior police officer.

According to a report in media, the teenager has confessed to his crime and admits that he has learnt the art of hacking by watching videos on the internet. Over the past few weeks, he attempted to hack several other government websites where he could not succeed.

“With the help of technical surveillance, police traced and apprehended him. The juvenile was produced in front of the Juvenile Justice Board and handed over to his brother, who is a software engineer,” said an officer.

The hacking was brought to notice only after some candidates shared screenshots of the website on Twitter around midnight on September 10 and 11.
