With Delhi being under siege from the worst smog the city has seen in the last two decades, Mail Today is reporting that those who have undergone organ transplants are the worst sufferers. Delhi’s air has high presence of viral and bacterial infection and other poisonous gases which has triggered health woes among people.

Dr Anup Kumar, head of the department of urology and renal transplant at Safdarjung Hospital told Mail Today, “Last month, we had discharged about 6-7 patients who had undergone renal transplant. They were doing well. But now, they have all reported back to the hospital complaining of chest infection.”

Health experts say that in India, one of the major causes of death of kidney patients is chest infection. Dr Sanjeev Gulati, director and head of Fortis Institute of Renal Science and Transplant, said, “I have two renal patients still admitted for respiratory treatment. A little chest infection can worsen their condition leading to fatalities.”

Dr H Jauhari, chairman, renal transplant division at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital informed that any kind of respiratory complication can deteriorate the condition of a kidney patient. “If the patient is waiting for transplant and has contracted chest infection, he has to wait for the respiratory ailments to settle first,” he said, adding such patients are at major risk due to air pollution.
