The best time for prayers and lighting diyas, called the Pradosh Kaal Shubh Muhurat, will be from 5:15 PM to 7:50 PM. On this night, millions of lamps are lit on the ghats and homes to honor the gods and invite peace and prosperity.
Meaning of Dev Diwali 2025
According to old Hindu stories, Dev Diwali is the day when Lord Shiva destroyed the demon Tripurasura, freeing the gods from his evil powers. Because of this, the day is also known as Tripurari Purnima. The name Tripurari comes from Lord Shiva himself, meaning “the destroyer of Tripura.”

Even tho Varanasi is the main place for Dev Diwali, people all over India celebrate it in their own ways. In Tamil Nadu, the festival is called Karthigai Deepam, and huge lamps are lit in Lord Shiva’s temples, making the whole place shine beautifully.
On the other hand in Kerala, people know it as Trikarthika, while in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it is called Karthika Maasalu. In many temples, priests light lamps with 365 wicks, each wick standing for one day of the year.
