In Bihar, tension prevails in Laxman Dera village in Buxar district after the murder of three relatives of a well-known family of doctors settled by the town which is 140km west of Patna, late on Thursday night.

As per police reports, a group of criminals forcefully entered the ancestral house of Dr Rai at Laxman Dera village around 11 PM on Thursday night and fired on the family.

Rai’s brother Manoj Rai (30), Santosh Rai (28) and Rai’s father Ram Bachchan Rai were shot dead from a close range. The assailants also attacked Santosh’s wife Manorama Devi and daughter Kajal but they survived as they took shelter in a room.

Buxar police said that the three was dead on spot. The assumed motive of the murder was that family members of Rai had allegedly helped police in an encounter which killed Suresh Rajbhar, a dacoit along with six of his associates in June 2010.

The allegations are made on the basis of the fact that Suresh’ brother Chandan Rajbhar alias Munna Rajbhar was released from jail a few days ago.

“The police apprehend that Chandan committed the crime to avenge the killing of his elder brother and his six accomplices,” an investigating officer said.

The statements of the survivors have been recorded and six cartridges have been recovered from the place of murder.

This series of murder increases the murder count in Buxar to at least six in only a month. Kamlakant Tiwary, the father of a journalist, was gunned down by armed criminals near Sumeshwarsthan in Buxar town on March 30 this year.

Similarly, three members of a family – a woman and her two kids – were killed by a relative at Banswar village under the jurisdiction of Brahmpur police station of the district on April 1 this year.

“We are keeping a close watch on the activities of other criminal gangs operating in the area, considered to be vulnerable from the security point of view,” said Buxar police.
