The “Paid Vacation Act,” which would have required employers to provide their employees with a minimum of one week of paid annual leave, was an attempt by Congress to enact it in 2009.
This endeavor was regrettably unsuccessful. Since then, the only significant cultural shift regarding paid leave has occurred since 2013, when a limited number of states began requiring an annual minimum of paid sick days. Arizona; Connecticut; Maine; Maryland; Massachusetts; Michigan; Nevada; New York; New Jersey; New Mexico; Oregon; Rhode Island; Vermont; and Washington are the states in question.
57% of American employees, according to a 2011 report, had at least two weeks of unused vacation time by the end of the year. While some may attribute this to the intense competition in the U.S. labor market, the truth remains that leave-taking is crucial for the health and productivity of the workforce as a whole.
