Eat an Eskimo Pie Day 2023: Eat an Eskimo Pie Day is annually celebrated on March 28. It celebrates the discovery of America’s first chocolate-covered ice cream bar, also known as Eskimo’s Pie, a vanilla ice cream bar coated in chocolate and served on a stick.
HISTORY OF EAT AN ESKIMO PIE DAY
In the summer of 1920, Christian Kent Nelson, a high school teacher and proprietor of a candy store, witnessed a boy torn between purchasing ice cream or a chocolate bar. The youngster ultimately purchased the chocolate. The youngster replied that he only had one nickel, so he was unable to purchase his preferred snack. To satisfy more children, Nelson had the idea of combining the two treats at this juncture.
A month later, he effectively created the I-Scream Bar, a chocolate-coated ice cream bar.
Nelson initially created 500 bars sans poles and sold them at a fireman’s picnic. After selling his first few quantities successfully, Nelson began looking for a manufacturer to expand his business. He collaborated with chocolate manufacturer Russel C. Stover to rebrand the ice cream bars as Eskimo Pies. Nelson and Stover eventually sold the rights to local ice cream stores in their region.
By the spring of 1922, over a million Eskimo Pies were sold daily in over 2,700 distinct stores. Ice cream bars reached their height of popularity in 1934. Then, to make the pies easier to consume, sticks were introduced, transforming them into the modern version we know and adore today. Nelson retired in 1961 and died on March 8, 1992, leaving behind a legacy that transformed the global ice cream industry for all time.
