EC directs Facebook to remove Abhinandan Varthaman’s photo shared by BJP MLA OP Sharma

The Election Commission has asked the social media platform Facebook to take down IAF wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s photo that was shared by BJP MLA OP Sharma along with few others.

On March 1, The Delhi MLA has shared the two posters on Facebook. Both the posters had a photo of the IAF wing commander, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and OP Sharma himself. He is the MLA of Delhi’s Vishwas Nagar.

The poll panel has asked all the political parties to not to make references of armed forces for the Lok Sabha election campaign. After the poll has asked to do so, the decision regarding removing the photo from the social media platform was taken.

After the Lok Sabha election schedule was announced, the Model Code of Conduct on social media has come into force and been using forces for a political campaign is in violation of the MCC.

EC has said on Abhinandan’s photo being shared on Facebook that they have already ordered Facebook and Twitter to take down or filter such election-related material and remove the content accordingly.

Also, the election commission has conducted meetings with the officials if social media platforms to ensure that the elections are conducted in a smooth and convenient manner.
