Hashimoto’s Disease: Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor, currently receiving attention for his role in Singham Again, has opened up about his battle with mild depression and Hashimoto’s disease. The actor revealed how the autoimmune condition, which affects the thyroid, has led to significant challenges with weight management. Arjun shared that both his mother and sister, Anshula Kapoor, also have the same disease.

Hashimoto’s disease occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland, leading to hypothyroidism. Symptoms often include weight gain, fatigue, and mood changes, making it difficult to maintain a stable weight, even with minimal lifestyle changes. Kapoor explained that his body’s response to the condition sometimes leads to weight gain, even after flying, highlighting how distressing this condition can be.

Hashimoto’s disease: what is it?

The thyroid gland is impacted by the autoimmune condition known as Hashimoto’s disease. The thyroid is a tiny, butterfly-shaped gland located in your neck that regulates a number of vital bodily processes, including metabolism, or how your body uses energy.

The immune system unintentionally targets the thyroid in Hashimoto’s disease, which results in inflammation and decreased thyroid function. This can eventually result in hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid is underactive.

Hashimoto’s disease causes

The exact cause of Hashimoto’s disease remains unclear, but several factors are known to increase the risk of developing this autoimmune condition. Genetics play a significant role; if someone in your family has thyroid problems, you may be at a higher risk. Women are more prone to Hashimoto’s disease compared to men, and it is most commonly diagnosed in middle-aged adults. Additionally, having other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or type 1 diabetes can make you more susceptible to Hashimoto’s disease.

While it can affect people at any age, it tends to be more common in adults, particularly those between 30 and 50 years old. Monitoring thyroid health through regular check-ups is important, especially if you have any of these risk factors.

Hashimoto’s disease symptoms

Hashimoto’s disease symptoms may not show up right away and develop gradually. When they occur, an underactive thyroid is frequently the cause. The National Institutes of Health lists the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue: Feeling extremely tired or low in energy.
  • Weight Gain: Gaining weight without changes in diet or activity.
  • Cold Sensitivity: Feeling unusually cold, even in warm environments.
  • Hair and Skin Changes: Dry, thinning hair and dry skin.
  • Muscle and Joint Pain: Aches and stiffness in muscles and joints.
  • Constipation: Difficulty with regular bowel movements.
  • Mood Changes: Feeling depressed, anxious, or forgetful.

If untreated, Hashimoto’s disease can lead to more serious health issues, so it’s essential to consult a doctor if you experience these symptoms.
