Explaining Daiva Vyayaprashraya Chikitsa: Can Prayer Really Cure Diseases?

Explaining Daiva Vyayaprashraya Chikitsa: Imagine a healing method so ancient, sublime, and transformative that it harnesses the divine to treat modern ailments. Forget everything you thought you knew about medicine—Daiva Vyayaprashraya Chikitsa might just revolutionize your approach to wellness.

Explaining Daiva Vyayaprashraya Chikitsa

Daiva Vyayaprashraya Chikitsa, or “divine therapy,” is one of the three pillars of classical Ayurvedic treatment alongside Kārya (herbal/mineral therapies) and Sāttvika (psychological–spiritual practices). In this ancient paradigm, divine healing is neither purely spiritual nor strictly medical. Rather, it blends ritual, mantra, and devotion to address those deep layers of health that other methods often miss .

History

Daiva Vyapashraya is said to be a kind of divine therapy derived mainly from Atharvaveda. It mainly works on the basis of faith. The more the belief of the person on this therapy, the more would be the effect and more the healing. Therefore it can be considered as a ‘faith therapy’.

Faith is an important component of healing therapies. Even in counseling sessions it is the faith and trust which has gradually developed between the physician and the patient which helps in the complete healing of the patient.

Daivavyapashraya chikitsa is a spiritual therapy in Ayurveda that involves the use of mantras, herbs, gems, and other practices to treat both physical and mental ailments. The term is made up of two parts: “Daiva”, which means divine or heavenly, and “Vya-pashraya”, which means dependent on.

For example ‘When one recites ‘one thousand names’ of thousand headed Lord Vishnu (Vishnu Sahasranama) who is the lord of all movable and inert things in the creation and all pervading, will get rid of all the fevers in quick time’.

Similarly, performing Yagya in patients suffering from Rajyakshma (Tuberculosis) along with medication helps in the flow of positivity within the patient and also helps to create a positive and energetic environment nearby and results in quick recovery.

Ever noticed the high energy transfer within you as soon as you enter any temple premises. Thats how Daiva-vyapashraya chikitsa helps in healing you through “Prabhav”.

Three Core Techniques of Divine Therapy

1. Mantra Therapy

Chanting sacred sounds believed to resonate with the healing frequencies of the body. These mantras are said to purge past traumas and strengthen mental resilience .

2. Yagna (Sacrificial Rituals)

Fire-led ceremonies using offerings like ghee or medicinal herbs. The ritual purifies and harmonizes both the practitioner and the environment via spiritual intention .

3. Charma or Aushadha

Using sacred substances herbs, ash, milk, or honey as ritual elements. Not administered as medicine, these are meant to be spiritually consecrated before use .

Why It’s So Unique and Effective?

Bridges Ancient Wisdom with Modern Health: This therapy addresses mental blocks, emotional imbalances, and energetic disruptions—domains often untouched by purely clinical approaches .

Holistic Healing for Mind, Body & Spirit: By combining mantra and ritual, it synchronizes all layers of the self, offering deep psychological release and enhancing spiritual harmony .

Restorative Power Across Layers of Disease: It’s traditionally indicated for imbalances of mind (citta), spirit (sattva), metabolism, immunity, and more—making it versatile for both acute and chronic conditions.

How Daiva Vyapashraya Chikitsa works?

Daiva Vyapashraya is purportedly a form of divine therapy based largely on Atharva Veda. It primarily functions on the honor system. Greater the conviction of the individual about this treatment, greater would be the result and greater the cure. So it can be viewed as a form of ‘faith therapy’.

I have come to believe that faith is the unsung important ingredient in healing therapies. In fact, even in ordinary counseling sessions it is the confidence and faith which has slowly nurtured between the physician and the patient that works. So, by extension, faith is a crucial element of psychology and psychotherapy. My requirement for the patient, or my expectation about the patient, is that the client/patient must have complete faith in the treatment and treatment approach and medicines used therein. Daiva, as mentioned before, means godly, divine, celestial or to any deeds of previous life (previous birth). The diseases caused as a result of the action of daiva are known as daivakruta vyadhis. The goal of daiva vyapashraya chikitsa is to heal these afflictions. Thus these medicinal treatments are crafted to obliterate the scars of wicked deeds of yesteryear in order to fight and heal diavakruta maladies.

Trust Factor: Beyond spirituality, the patient’s belief in the physician and in the treatments and medicines given by that physician on the back of faith, even medicinal or non-medicinal, appears to function in a positive manner.

Impact on Sattva Guna: To some extent, Daiva Vyapashraya may help rejuvenate and balance the sattva quality of the mind which is required to restore the normal functioning of the mind. Most of the modalities discussed in this practice serve to stimulate the sattva quality of the mind and transcend the imbalanced rajas and tamas qualities. Because they are indeed mutual.

Impact of Rajas and Tamas Guna: Apart from balancing the sattva guna, daiva vyapashraya also helps in balancing the mind impurities i.e. rajas and tamas qualities of the mind. Excess of rajas and / or tamas and lack of sattva quality of the mind is the reason for all mental disorders. While treating the mental disorders the physician should aim at not only improving the sattva quality but to suppress the aggravated rajas or tamas quality. Most of the karyas listed under daiva vyapashraya chikitsa are practically proved to serve this purpose. This equilibrium between the qualities of the intellect need to be redressed in the psyche if the mental illnesses are to be healed in a wholistic manner.

Effect on Manovaha Srotas: Daiva Vyapashraya Chikitsa has its impact on the mind channels (nerves, brain) and has a cleansing effect on them, in terms of flushing out the negative thoughts and fears and in nurturing the positivity. As these mental disorders would get cured, the mind itself would get fortified in the process.

Bhuta Vidya: This has been described as one of the eight specialties of Ayurveda by Acharya Sushruta which is known as Graha Chikitsa. This is the branch that mostly focuses on treating the diseases wrought by these unknown forces and entities. Sushruta has suggested to introduce bali (sacrifices, offerings), homa (fire sacrifices), Havana (putting ghee in holy fire). According to the first of the classical texts, the Charaka Samhita, ashramadhatu and achara measures to placate the grahas (supernatural forces) creating rog, rog in these references including mental rog, mental diseases as mentioned before such as depression.

Contrition / atonement for deeds in the past: Most mental illnesses are claimed to have been a result of sins committed in the last incarnation or sins performed in the far or near past. Daivakruta Diseases i.e. diseases resulting due to the devilish actions of past or sinful actions performed in the past are the main target for Daiva Vyapashraya Chikitsa. This implies that these treatments are performed to appease and prevent the return of these ailments. Often the patient who has committed sins or wrongdoings in the past will still be living in that guilt.

Prayaschita i.e. atonement, realization and acceptance / pledge to rectify behavior would simplify the living of these individuals and come back out of the psychological trauma they’re experiencing afte9r having committed the sins a long time ago. It would function as must desired brain balm and help genius cures the mind diseases.
