Fake News During SIR Protests: Delhi Police has filed over four FIRs tied to social media pages that allegedly spread false claims and steer public views during protests connected to the Special Intensive Revision of the voter roll process. Multiple reports say nearly 500 posts were removed as officials worked to stop rumours and keep order.

The FIRs were filed by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit. That team is watching online activity related to the ongoing protests. This move comes at a tense time in politics. The Opposition has been holding demonstrations over the Election Commission’s voter roll revision work, and the atmosphere around it has been heated.

Officials mentioned in the reports say some social media accounts shared wrong details about the protests. They point to claims that people died during the events on October 10.

Fake News During SIR Protests

According to police, FIRs were registered at Connaught Place, Tilak Marg, Barakhamba, and Mandir Marg police stations for the alleged violation of Section 163 of the BNSS. Police also say they found some social media handles that they claim are linked to Pakistan. They allege these accounts pushed anti-India content. They also allege that fake videos and misleading updates were posted while the accounts tried to appear like Indian users.

The case is now being treated as part of a wider probe into the online spread of misinformation. Along with the FIRs, authorities say they removed about 500 posts that were said to be fuelling rumours or trying to cause unrest.

SIR Protests Put Social Media Under Scrutiny

Police moved in while Opposition groups were protesting the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists. The revision has turned into a heated political issue.

On October 12, leaders from the INDIA bloc and other lawmakers walked toward the Supreme Court in New Delhi. They said the voter list process has problems and they alleged irregularities. After the march, police filed FIRs at different stations. The FIRs cited alleged breach of orders during the rally.

Next steps are not clear yet. Investigations into the posts that are claimed to be misleading are still underway. The same is true for the FIRs tied to the protests. What will be said about the accounts mentioned, which legal sections were cited in the misinformation cases, and whether anyone is arrested will rest on what officials share.

For now, the reported arrests and police actions show how online misinformation can matter in tense political events. Claims can travel fast during protests, and they can affect what people think before the full facts come out.
