A railway official stated that six of the 29 identified bodies were returned to their families on Friday and 13 on Saturday.
The railway official stated, “On the basis of DNA test results and in coordination with AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), and GRP, 13 bodies of the Bahanaga train accident victims were returned to their families on Saturday.”
He stated that four of the thirteen bodies were sent to Bihar, eight to West Bengal, and one to Jharkhand.
An ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh each has been made to the family members’ relatives, as announced by the railways, said the official.
The official stated that the process of handing over the remains will continue until the claimants arrive and that 62 bodies are still unidentified and stored in containers at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.
287 of the 293 persons killed in the collision involving the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, and a stationary goods train died on the scene or were transported to a hospital dead, while the remaining six succumbed to their injuries in hospitals.
The tragedy occurred on the evening of June 2 near the Bahanaga Bazar station in the Balasore district.
