Inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s tweet in support of freedom of expression over the mention of Rajiv Gandhi in the web series Sacred Games, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee member, Rajeev Sinha withdrew his complaint against Netflix series.

Sinha had filed a complaint against Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Netflix and the producers of the show for “abusing” former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the show and misinterpreting the facts owing to his governance.

However, Rahul Gandhi tweeted on Saturday, saying, “BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right. My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that.”

Following Rahul Gandhi’s tweet, Sinha withdrew the complaint saying that he was inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s tweet and learnt that “forgiveness is much bigger than anything else in this mortal world”. He also urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to make guidelines to prevent the use of abusive language against “great martyrs in the name of freedom of speech”.

Congress’s decision to withdraw the lodged police complaint has been appreciated and welcomed by many from the Bollywood industry as well including Director Anurag Kashyap.
