In the results for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) that was declared on Friday, March 15, candidate from Uttar Pradesh, Ritesh Lalwani topped the Electrical Engineering (EE) stream.

Lalwani not only cleared the prestigious exam which is attempted by lakhs of candidates but also came out first in the results in only his second attempt.  Lalwani is said to have found inspiration from his seniors and Bollywood blockbuster Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

“A senior scored AIR 51 in GATE and he told me how it will open wide scopes in jobs and higher studies. I started preparing for the entrance examination when I was in the third year,” the 2019 EE Gate topper was quoted by The Indian Express.

Unlike most of the candidates who choose to go for higher education, Lalwani wishes to apply for profiles in Public Sector Units. He appeared for the UPSC Indian Engineering Services and has cleared the prelims, while the main exams will take place on June 30, 2019.

“The knowledge that we acquire through study has no meaning if we cannot implement it in practical life. Our education system has a huge gap from the practical world, so I do not want to go for further studies and to experience myself in a practical field,” Lalwani had said to the national daily.

GATE is an all India examination that tests comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate branches in engineering. The exam takes place for admission into postgraduate programs in Indian institutes of higher education with financial aid provided by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The exam was conducted over multiple branches of engineering, including Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering and 15 others.
