Go Topless Day also known as National Go Topless Day or International Go Topless Day, is an event significantly observed every year in the United States. This day is celebrated in support of the right of women to go topless in public on gender-equality grounds. This year, we will be celebrating the 13th Annual Go Topless Day on August 23.

It’s a 24-hour period where ladies are encouraged to show their breasts as a protest against hypocritical laws that allow guys to walk around shirtless while women must remain clothed. On this day, topless freedom laws are celebrated and protests are held across states where topless women are prohibited.

This is a revolutionary event in which women from all walks of life participates and dared to show their breasts publicly. Protests, rallies and marches are held to recognise women’s rights to go topless.

Have a look at the Go Topless Day date, its history, significance and everything else that you should know about this day.

Go Topless Day 2020 Date:

The annual event was initiated in 2007 a US-based organisation called Go Topless. The day was introduced by Claude Vorilhon, leader of the Raelian Movement, a UFO religion.

Go Topless Day is scheduled for the Sunday nearest August 26, Women’s Equality Day, the day when in 1920 women’s suffrage was approved.

Every year, the date for Go Topless Day changes, depending on this reason. Go Topless Day 2020 is on August 23, Sunday nearest to August 26.

Go Topless Day History and Significance:

Go Topless Day was launched in 2007 when activist Phoenix Feeley won a lawsuit against New York City after she was “wrongfully arrested” for going bare-chested in public in 2005, in New York.

Female toplessness is legal in New York City since 1992, and so the city ultimately awarded Feeley $29,000 in damages for their mistake. This event is a celebration of that law.

“As long as men are allowed to be topless in public, women should have the same constitutional right. Or else, men should have to wear something to hide their chests,” says Claude Vorilhon.

The annual event was first started in 2007 by Go Topless, a Nevada group formed by Claude Vorilhon, leader of the Raelian Movement, a UFO religion. The event encourages women to go topless in public.

Protests and pride parades are held every year in US cities, including New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Los Angeles, Paris, and Berlin.

Not only females go topless, but also men during protest and rallies, sometimes seen wearing bikini tops to stand in support with the women.

Go Topless pointed out that most states in the United States enjoy the top freedom, and a dozen states are still ambiguous on this issue.
