Google’s cute little doodle for India’s Teacher’s Day

Google’s doodle for Teacher’s Day 2016 is a teacher teaching her students as they walk. Standard? Well, Google doesn’t do standard. The teacher and her cute little students are pencils!

Teacher’s Day is celebrated in India annually on September 5, honouring the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second president of India. Schools and colleges across the country celebrate the day with special programmes and events to express gratitude towards our teachers. In many institutions, Class XI or XII students dress up as teachers to take classes for a day, while teachers are given day to relax and take some time off.

The doodle comprises of a bespectacled teacher pencil reading and teaching out of a book, while five student pencils follow suit — walking, skipping and jumping. The same doodle, created by artist Nate Swinehart, was used by Google for the US Teacher’s Day.

Dr Radhakrishnan believed ‘teachers should be the best minds in the country’. When he was president, he once said that instead of celebrating his birthday, it would be a privilege for him if his date of birth were to be celebrated as Teacher’s Day, and so it was.

Although, India celebrates Teacher’s Day on September 5, World Teacher’s Day is on October 5.
