The crackdown on slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh under Hindutva hardliner Yogi Adityanath is adversely affecting the marriage ceremonies in the country’s most populated state.

According to a report, a groom called off a marriage ceremony in Muzaffarnagar after the bride’s family said they may not be able to serve any non-vegetarian food at the function.

The bride’s family filed a complaint at a police station accusing the groom of pressurising them to serve non-vegetarian food, Scroll.in reported.

“Rizwan’s family has been consistently pressurising me to serve them a non-vegetarian dish of their choice. Buffalo meat is not [easily] available because of which I have been telling them that I will not be able to fulfil their demand,” the complainant said.

However, the bride chose to marry another man as he had agreed to marry her without demanding any non-vegetarian dishes at the wedding.

Even if the strict ban on cow slaughter exempted the personal consumption of buffalo meat, multiple media reports suggest it is even difficult to serve non-veg items in the state.
