Holika Dahana 2023: Holika Dahana, also known as the Festival of Colors, is held every March and this year it occurs on March 7. The festival’s date changes each year because it is decided by the Indian lunar calendar. It is, however, observed during the first full moon in March, which occurs between March 7 and March 28. The holiday commemorates the tale of Prahlad and Holika, two characters from Indian folklore who triumphed over evil. The holiday is observed on an auspicious date in the evening with bonfires and dancing. The party continues the next day with splash play, in which participants throw colour powder at each other. This is known as Holi. As the Spring season begins, connections are repaired and formed on this day.

HOLIKA DAHANA HISTORY

Holika Dahan is the first day of the Holi festival. On this day, pyres are built all over India to prepare for a ritual in which a large group of people chant and dance in unison around a burning effigy. The fire represents the expulsion of an evil spirit and starts in the evening, as soon as the full moon appears.

The procession retells the tale of Holika and her nephew Prahlad. Hiranyakashyapu, Prahlad’s father, was a great king who got divine powers. Nothing could ever harm or kill him. As a result, he assumed the role of a god and demanded that everyone worship him. Although the townspeople followed example, the king’s own son did not worship his father because he was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu, the supreme being.

Hiranyakashyapu was enraged by this blatant disregard, so he attempted to murder his son. After numerous failed attempts, the king decided to seek assistance from his fire-resistant sister, Holika. Holika was tasked with luring Prahlad into a burning pyre, resulting in Prahlad’s death. To their dismay, the plan did not go as anticipated because Lord Vishnu intercepted. Despite her immunity, Vishnu saved Prahlad and Holika from the fire.

Vishnu was dubbed “The Protector of Good” because he shielded his devotee from his evil aunt. Holika Dahan is followed by fun festivities the next day, with water splashing, painting with colour powder, and snacks. During this holiday, devotees seek solace in Lord Vishnu, while others honour Prahlad’s bravery and trust.

The day is spent reconciling and reflecting on one’s life and relationships. The holiday’s symbolism has spread across borders, and it is now celebrated by Hindus in India as well as by people all over the world. South Africa, Europe, Australia, and the United States all take part in the celebrations.
