How do Muslims celebrate Shab e-Barat in India?

Mosques are illuminated with colourful string lights and papers, and devotees gather there to pray with “Isha Ki Namaz” throughout the night. On Shab-e-Barat, the Holy Quran is recited until dawn, and spiritual melodies are sung throughout the entire night.

Members of the Muslim community also observe the tradition of visiting mosques and cemeteries on this day. The following day, before Azan, people consume Sehri, and then they observe a fast.

People are encouraged to donate money, clothing, and other items to the impoverished and needy in memory of departed loved ones. Additionally, they pray at home with their own families during this special occasion. It is believed that a person will be granted absolution if he prays all night while repenting for his evil deeds. Some Muslims also fast and perform nighttime worship.

The significance and history of Shab e-Barat

According to the Hadeeth (proverbs of the Prophet Muhammad), Shab-e-Barat is a night in which Allah determines the fortunes of humans for the coming year. On this night, it is believed that the gates of mercy and forgiveness are wide open, and people can approach Allah for His infinite mercy.

Therefore, Shab e-Barat is a night filled with blessings for all Muslims, and Muslims must observe its distinctive characteristics:

  • Tasqeem-e-umur: death and birth, joy and sorrow, success and failure.
  • Faizaan e Bakhshish: absolution granted
  • Nazool e Rahmat: favour
  • Qabool e Shifaat: intercessional acceptance
  • Fazeelat e Ibaadat is the magnificence of devotion.
