House Of The Dragon Season 3: House Of The Dragon ended its second season in August 2024. Since then people waited for any small update. Now actor Matt Smith has given the clearest sign so far about when the next season may arrive.

Matt Smith spoke during an interview on This Morning. He said the new season should come in August next year. Since season 2 ended in August 2024 this points to August 2026 as the likely release time. HBO has not shared an official date yet.

Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen. At the end of season 2 Daemon fully supported Rhaenyra Targaryen. This choice sets the stage for bigger conflict in the next season.

Why the Long Gap Makes Sense

House Of The Dragon takes a long time to make. The show uses large sets heavy costumes and many dragon scenes. Big battles also need careful planning and long editing time. Season 1 came out in 2022. Season 2 followed almost two years later in 2024. A two year wait again fits this pattern.

Season 3 will also need extra post production work. The story includes massive wars and dragon fights. This explains why August 2026 feels realistic based on how the show works.

War Grows Bigger in Season 3

Season 3 will go deeper into the Dance of the Dragons. This war starts after King Viserys Targaryen names Rhaenyra as his heir. After his death the kingdom splits. Some people support Rhaenyra. Others support her half brother Aegon. This fight pushes the land into full civil war.

Emma D’Arcy returns as Rhaenyra Targaryen. Matt Smith continues as Daemon. Olivia Cooke returns as Alicent Hightower. Tom Glynn Carney plays King Aegon II. Ewan Mitchell returns as Aemond Targaryen. Rhys Ifans appears again as Otto Hightower. Steve Toussaint returns as Corlys Velaryon. James Norton joins as Ormund Hightower who becomes important for the Greens.

HBO Max also shared preview images for 2026. One image shows Aemond sitting on the Iron Throne. In the book Fire & Blood Aemond rules as Prince Regent while Aegon is hurt. Season 2 already hinted at this change. Season 3 will show it fully.

Other images show Rhaenyra wearing her father’s crown. Corlys appears in battle armor. Ormund commands soldiers. Alicent comforts Aemond. One strange image shows a burning skull. Its meaning remains unclear. It could connect to Harrenhal or a vision.
