Commission post office commission: The government has shared fresh details about small savings agents working in post offices across India. Currently there are 2,66,414 agents under the Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana (MPKBY) and the Standardised Agency System (SAS). These agents help people invest money in different post office small savings schemes and earn commission from some of these schemes.

Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary gave this information in the Lok Sabha on December 15, 2025. He explained that the government looked again at the commission system in 2011. This review happened because the Government of India started pushing more towards digital payments and online transactions.
According to Upstox, Chaudhary said, “At present, there are 2,66,414 Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojana (MPKBY) and Standardised Agency System (SAS) Agents working in post offices to operate Small Savings Schemes across the country. The commissions on investing in the scheme were reviewed, in view, inter alia, of shifting focus of the Government of India towards digital transactions.”
He was answering a question that asked if it was true that more than six lakh small savings agents work in post offices and whether their commissions were cut or removed after 2011.

What Commission do Agents get on different Schemes?
According tot he newst rule the agents earn 4% commission on the 5-year recurring deposit scheme. They get 0.5% commission on Kisan Vikas Patra, National Savings Certificate, Post Office Monthly Income Scheme, and Post Office Time Deposit accounts. But the agents do not get any commission for Public Provident Fund (PPF), Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana or the the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme.

Before 2011 agents used to earn 1% commission on both PPF and Senior Citizen Savings Scheme accounts but this benefit was later removed.
The data also shows that the total commission paid to MPKBY and SAS agents has increased over time too. In 2010-11, the total commission paid was ₹2324.15 crore. By 2023-24, this amount had gone up to ₹4149.77 crore, according to figures shared in the Lok Sabha.
