Android users in the country will soon have access to an earthquake alert system thanks to a partnership between the firm and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC). This technology will utilize information gathered from cellphones to detect and warn users of impending earthquakes.
Activate Earthquake Alerts on Your Android Phone
Google has said on its blog that all Android smartphones have built-in accelerometers that can be used as miniature seismometers. A phone that is plugged in and charging can sense the first signs of an earthquake even before it does any noticeable damage. Our server can determine the likelihood of an earthquake occurring and other details about the event, such as its epicenter and magnitude, if many phones report feeling tremors at the same moment. Then, our server can notify neighboring phones via push notifications.
Be Aware Alerts and Take Action Alerts will be sent to Android users depending on data gathered by their devices.
As its name implies, the Be Aware Alert is meant to warn users of impending light shaking and provide additional details when tapped. It works in accordance with the user’s phone’s volume, Do Not Disturb, and Notification preferences. In contrast, the Take Action Alert is meant to draw your attention before you encounter moderate to intense shaking, giving you time to take appropriate precautions. The user’s smartphone screen will light up and a loud sound will play, even if the user has set their device to “Do Not Disturb.”

- The first thing you need to do is enable mobile data or Wi-Fi on your Android device.
- Proceed by launching the Android device’s Settings app.
- Access your Android’s safety and emergency settings.
- After that, go to your Android’s settings and find the Earthquake alerts menu.
- If you still can’t find it, go to Step 5 and select Location > Advanced > Earthquake notifications if you’re using an Android device.
- The sixth step is to activate the Earthquake Alerts feature.
