Artificial intelligence has permeated many facets of our existence and altered how we perceive and produce art. With algorithms that can simulate human intelligence, AI can be used to recreate the world’s visual marvels and generate images that are astoundingly realistic and original.

Adobe now offers Adobe Firefly, an AI-enabled creative tool that allows users to create genuine photos and artwork with human imagination. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about Adobe Firefly and how to generate AI images with simplicity.

What exactly is Adobe Firefly?

Adobe’s Firefly is a collection of artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed to generate images, construct text and vector designs, and modify images by adding and replacing objects and backgrounds. In order to contend with OpenAI’s DALL-E, Microsoft Bing Image Creator, Midjourney, and Canva, Adobe offers free image creation and editing to all Adobe account holders.

You can generate images from inception using your imagination and converting them into text prompts for the Firefly web application. Adobe’s AI tool will then generate a set of images based on your instructions, and you can modify the generated images using a variety of parameters, including aspect ratio, content type, style, colour and tone, lighting, and composition. The company claims that its Firefly image-synthesis model was trained with millions of images and text descriptions from Adobe’s stock library.

How to access Adobe Firefly’s AI image creator

Adobe offers its text-to-image generator as part of its Adobe Firefly web app, which anyone with an existing Adobe account can access for free. Access the Adobe Firefly web app by visiting firefly.adobe.com in a web browser (Google Chrome, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox are supported).

When the Adobe Firefly homepage loads, select Sign In in the upper-right hand corner.

On the Sign In page that loads, you can sign in with an email address associated with an existing Adobe account or select the Create an account link to create a new Adobe account. Additionally, you can enrol in to Adobe using your Apple, Google, or Facebook account.

After logging into your Adobe account, you will return to the Adobe Firefly homepage. Scroll down and then select Generate in the “Text to image” box.

You are now on the Text to Image page within Adobe Firefly, where you can begin using Adobe’s image generator to generate AI-generated images from text prompts.

How to create AI images using Adobe Firefly

To begin using Adobe Firefly to create AI images, go to the Text to image page in your web browser. You can generate images using text queries and modify images generated using Adobe’s AI tool from this page.

Once you reach the Text to image page, you should see a variety of AI creations that were submitted to Adobe Firefly by other users. You can hover over any of these images to view the corresponding image creation prompt. This will provide some inspiration before you begin creating your own images using Adobe’s image creator.

When set to enter your input, click the text box at the bottom and begin typing. This prompt can include every imaginable aspect of the image you wish to create, such as the subject, background, illumination, camera, field of view, and so on. After entering the input prompt, you can select the Generate button in the lower-right corner to have Adobe Firefly process your request.

Based on your input, Firefly will now generate 4 images. With the “Art” content type selected, each of these images will have a square aspect ratio of 1:1. You can modify these results with various parameters, which we will detail in the following section.

You can click on any of these images to magnify them, making them visible in this manner.

If you like one of these generated images and want Adobe Firefly to create more variations of it, you can hover over the desired image and select the Show similar option in the upper-left corner of the preview.

When you do so, Firefly will retain the selected image and generate three variations of it by substituting new results for the other images. When replacing existing creations with new ones, there is no means to access previously generated content.

How to alter images produced by Adobe Firefly

In the preceding section, we demonstrated how to create AI images using text cues and how to interact with the generated images. If you wish to customise the generated images to your preference, you can use the options outlined below to achieve the desired results.

Before we begin, you must generate images using Adobe Firefly by inputting your prompt.

Note that modifying images with any of these options will generate a new collection of images based on your prompt and options. Since there is no way to retrieve previously created images, it is prudent to extract them before refreshing the results.

Select an aspect ratio

Firefly generates images with a 1:1 (square) aspect ratio by default. Adobe, on the other hand, allows you to select alternative aspect ratios once you’ve generated your initial set of AI-generated images. Click the Aspect ratio drop-down menu to alter the aspect ratio of generated images.

Here, you can choose from Square (1:1), Landscape (4:3), Portrait (3:4), Widescreen (16:9), or Vertical (9:16) aspect ratios.

By selecting any of the preceding options, a new set of images with the selected aspect ratio is generated.

You can transition to a different aspect ratio at any time to generate new images in Firefly’s image generator.

Modify content category

When you produce an image in Firefly, the “Art” Content type will be applied to all of the generated images. This option specifies the type of images that can be created with Firefly. Although Adobe sets the content type automatically, you can select one that is appropriate for the image you wish to create.

When generating images on Firefly, you can select any of the following options under “Content type”: Photo, Graphic, or Art. The first of these three will allow you to create more realistic, natural-looking images, while the other two will produce images that are more in line with artistic styles.

You can select None under “Content type” if you wish to generate images without implementing any of these styles. This will ensure that the generated results are arbitrary and not biassed towards a particular image category.

Firefly may automatically generate new images based on your selection when you alter the content type. In the event that the images have not been updated, you can select a specific content type and then click Generate at the bottom of the page.

Employ an aesthetic style

In addition to selecting a content category, you can customise your images using the available effects. You should see a list of Popular options under “Styles” by default, but you can select the All tab within this section to view all style options, or you can click other tabs to view styles under each of the other categories.

When you select a “Styles” category, you can click on a desired style option to add it to the list of options you intend to use to generate a new set of images. Once you have selected a particular design, it should appear at the bottom of your input prompt box.

Click Generate at the bottom of the screen to generate images using the new design. Adobe Firefly will now generate new results based on the selected prompt and visual design.

Change hue, value, illumination, and composition

Although you can create various types of images by selecting a unique combination of content type and style, Adobe allows you to further customise your creations by allowing you to select the picture’s colour and tone, lighting, and composition.

Tone and hue

This parameter controls the image’s overall colour tone. This setting can be used to create monochromatic images, undersaturated or oversaturated images, or images with warmer or cooler colours. To modify the overall tone of generated images, use the Colour and tone drop-down menu in the right sidebar.

You can select one of the following options from this page: black and white, muted colour, warm tone, cool tone, vibrant colour, or pastel colour. If you can’t determine which of these options is best, you can generate images using any of them in order to test them out.

After selecting a tone for your images, the chosen option should appear in the text area at the bottom. To generate images with this configuration, select Generate at the bottom of the screen.

Lighting

Adobe provides a dedicated section that enables you to select a specific illumination setting for AI-generated images. Although you can specify the type of illumination you desire in your input, this option will be useful for those who are unfamiliar with this aspect of images. Click the illumination dropdown menu on the right sidebar to adjust the illumination for generated images.

You may select any of the following options from this menu: Backlighting, Dramatic lighting, Golden hour, Studio lighting, and Low lighting. If you can’t determine which of these options is best, you can generate images using any of them in order to test them out.

After selecting the desired image lighting, the selected option should appear in the text field at the bottom. To generate images with this configuration, select Generate at the bottom of the screen.

Composition

Adobe Firefly enables you to change an image’s composition to modify its overall appearance and to manage the placement of subjects within an image, allowing you to make minor adjustments to your photos. Depending on the composition you select, you can create close-up photos, drone-like images, or photographs with a wide-angle view, bokeh, or blurred background. To alter the overall appearance of Firefly-generated images, select the Composition drop-down menu on the right sidebar.

You can select any of the following options from this menu: Blurry background, Close up, Wide angle, Narrow depth of field, Shot from below, Shot from above, or Macrophotography. If you can’t determine which of these options is best, you can generate images using any of them in order to test them out.

Once you select the appropriate image composition, the selected option should appear in the text field at the bottom. To generate images with this configuration, select Generate at the bottom of the screen.

You can generate new image sets after applying one of these options or all of them simultaneously. The most recent collection of images will contain all of the options you previously selected for your images.

How to add or replace objects in an Adobe Firefly-created image

Using Firefly’s Generative Fill tool, you can add or replace objects and backgrounds in an image created within the image generator. Generative Fill uses Adobe AI to Firefly AI to generate objects you visualise using text prompts, eliminate unwanted elements from an existing image, replace the backgrounds of subjects in an image, and extend an image onto a larger canvas.

To send a generated image to Generative Fill for editing, hover over the image you wish to edit and select the Generative Fill icon in the upper left corner of the image preview.

The selected image will open in the Generative Fill editor screen, where you can add or replace objects and backgrounds similarly to how you would modify a manually uploaded image.
