IEEE Global Engineering Day 2023: Date, History, Significance and Facts

IEEE Global Engineering Day 2023: IEEE Global Engineering Day, observed annually on May 13th, is dedicated to recognising the achievements of engineers and their contributions to society. Discussing engineering advancements or demonstrating the work of engineers are excellent methods for highlighting the enormous impact engineering has had on our daily lives. The next time you walk down the street, enter an office building, or cross a bridge, consider the tremendous skill and intelligence that went into creating the things you see and use every day.

HISTORY OF IEEE GLOBAL ENGINEERING DAY

IEEE Global Engineering Day is observed annually in May to honour the profession and field of study that has always pushed humanity’s known limits further. It also emphasises the need for governments to have a firmer mandate to promote science, technology, and engineering as rewarding and competitive career paths. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE), the world’s largest organisation of technical professionals with over 350,000 members in 160 countries, stresses the importance of encouraging more students and young professionals to pursue a career in engineering, computing, and technology fields.

The IEEE Foundation was established in 1973 and is governed by the laws of the State of New York to promote the scientific and educational objectives of the IEEE. The Foundation is managed by a Board of thirteen members with diverse technical, geographic, and professional backgrounds and a staff of ten. IEEE Global Engineering Day was established to unite the global community in honouring engineers and engineering’s future. It involves recognising their accomplishments and efforts. Through competitions, projects, and activities, students will be exposed to the field of engineering.

The world’s highest skyscrapers are found in major cities, along with a complex network of highways, subways, skyways, and cutting-edge airports and seaports. Automobiles can drive themselves, and drones can take wedding photographs. Engineers and other men of science are responsible for everything from the vast infrastructures that shape our landscapes to the mobile applications we use on a daily basis.

IEEE GLOBAL ENGINEERING DAY ACTIVITIES

Read about significant architects

Throughout the centuries, numerous influential engineers have forever altered our existence. Learn from these figures the intelligence and skill required for engineering to make a difference.

Study engineering

Consider enrolling in college and pursuing engineering. You can enter a field that not only advances and expands each year, but also produces tools, structures, and technologies that can alter the course of history.

Read a book concerning engineering.

You can find many books online about the study of engineering, biographies of famous engineers, and straightforward, easy-to-understand explanations of the most important engineering inventions of the past few decades. This would be a fantastic way to celebrate IEEE Global Engineering Day if you are interested in this discipline.

THE FIVE GREATEST ENGINEERS IN HISTORY

Leonardo da Vinci (1452—1519)

Da Vinci dabbled in various disciplines, including architecture, science, music, mathematics, and engineering.

Fazlur Rahman Khan (1929 —1982)

Khan is the progenitor of the modern skyscraper; his innovation facilitated the construction of tall buildings.

Nikola Tesla (1856 —1943)

This Serbian-American engineer contributed to the development of novel technologies.

Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was an inventor.

Engineer, mathematician, and philosopher Charles Babbage invented the computer.

Thomas Edison (1847-1931) was an inventor.

Edison created the phonograph, the cinematograph, and long-lasting light bulbs.

WHY WE LOVE IEEE GLOBAL ENGINEERING DAY

Essential is the celebration of science and engineering

Because engineering and science are fundamentally founded on mathematics and science, they are frequently perceived as dull or less entertaining. However, because it has spawned so many incredible inventions and had such a profound impact on civilization for so many years, it deserves as much attention as any other discipline.

It motivates youthful minds.

Hearing about IEEE Global Engineering Day may pique the interest of young people seeking guidance in choosing their fields of study in the direction of engineering. Some children excel in science and technology studies at a young age and should be encouraged to pursue careers that capitalise on their abilities.

We recognise inventions

Everything we see and use every day was invented by somebody. It required time and intelligence for someone to engineer the first bridge, construct the first automobile, or invent the first television. Without a few of these indispensable inventions, our lives would not only be monotonous, but also intolerable.
