India vs Pakistan Hockey Rivalry: Wednesday, August 9 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the Indian Men’s hockey team will square off against archrival Pakistan in the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament.

India, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, have already qualified for the event’s semifinals, so their match on Wednesday is merely a dress rehearsal for the semifinal match. India started their campaign with a bang after defeating the People’s Republic of China 7-2. The three-time Asian champions faced Japan next and were obliged to play to a draw because the Japanese defence did not allow the hosts many scoring opportunities.

However, the draw did not diminish their spirits as they defeated Malaysia 5-0 and South Korea 3-2 to advance to the semifinals. With ten points to their credit, India are in first place in the points tally.

Pakistan’s voyage has been fraught with obstacles. The Muhammad Umar Bhutta-led team succumbed 3-1 to Malaysia after a terrible start. Pakistan, a three-time champion in their own right, displayed fortitude and earned two draws against Japan and Korea before claiming their first victory of the tournament against the People’s Republic of China, 2-1.

The two Asian powerhouses met in Jakarta during the 2022 Asia Cup. The contest between the two teams was intense and resulted in a 1-1 draw. Despite Pakistan’s 82-64 advantage in head-to-head matchups, India has not lost a single game against its Asian neighbours in the last 14 contests. There have been 32 draws out of a total of 178 encounters between the two teams.

As the verbal battle off the pitch has already begun, it is possible that the match will be a mouth-watering contest. India, according to Pakistan’s head coach Muhammad Saqlain, are not playing structural hockey and are instead relying on their endurance and agility to win games.

“India does not play structural hockey, whereas Pakistan does. India is merely playing games with fitness. Korea and Japan are structural hockey players. India has been playing primarily behind the ball and relying heavily on counterattacks, Saqlain said in a pre-match press conference, as reported by PTI.
