Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, hailed the women fighting the practice of ‘triple talaq’ and said the entire country is with them in their endeavour to get their rights.

“I pay my regards to the women who had to lead a pitiable life due to ‘triple talaq’ and have started a movement which has created an environment in the entire country against the practice,” Modi said here in his Independence Day address. The Centre has said that it is against the practice of triple talaq. The matter is being adjudicated by a constitution bench of the Supreme Court.

Additionally, in his speech to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the recent death of nearly 70 children at the BRD Medical College hospital in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. He said that the sympathies of the entire nation were with the affected families.

Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi said, “Many parts of the country faced natural calamities in the recent past. Children died at a hospital, the entire nation is with them.” PM Modi also praised the country’s security forces for “sacrificing their lives to protect this land”.

“India’s security, our internal security is the top priority of our government. We are capable to thwart any challenges,” the PM said, while also referring to terrorism.
