Bihar: Indian Institute of Information Technology unit to be set up in Bhagalpur

The Bihar government has decided to allocate about 50 acres of land at Bhagalpur College of Engineering (BCE) to the Union ministry of human resource development (MHRD) for building up a unit of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT).

The plan has been in discussion since 2010. Energy minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav told the assembly members that the academic session of IIIT at BCE is proposed to commence from 2017-18.

“The state government will transfer 50 acres of land at BCE to the MHRD for setting up an IIIT unit in partnership with the Bihar State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (Beltron),” said Yadav.

The government proposed to establish new IIITs in different states in 2010. Although a few states managed to bring in the units by giving land for the same or through provisional campuses, Bihar couldn’t manage to take off the project in last 6 years. Principally, unavailability of land and disinterest from private partners has been attributed to the hindrance in the project so far.

However, the land has been already allocated and so the project may kick off soon.
