Omaha Corgi Crew celebrated the inaugural International Corgi Day. In December 2011, the soon-to-be nonprofit organisation was founded. It began as the passion endeavour of four friends who desired to bring greater awareness to corgis. The organisation currently promotes the rescue and adoption of corgis. Since it believes that all dogs are wonderful companions, the Omaha Corgi Crew also participates in fundraising efforts for canines other than corgis.
The history of corgis can be traced back to approximately the 12th century, when Flemish artisans settled in Wales. The weavers are most closely associated with the Pembroke Welsh corgi because it is owing to them that the population of this particular corgi breed increased. Cardigan Welsh corgis are another prevalent breed of corgi, but they are heavier and larger than Pembroke corgis. Additionally, the Cardigan breed is more associated with Norse settlers. In either case, both types of Welsh corgis were utilised as herders. They were referred to as ‘heelers’ due to their small stature and quick agility, which allowed them to easily navigate between large groupings of larger animals. Corgis would nip their herding animals’ heels to encourage them to move quicker. The dogs are also referred to as ‘dwarf’ dogs and ‘cur’ dogs, with the latter appellation derived from the Nordic word ‘kurra’, which means ‘to growl.’ There is also fascinating lore surrounding corgis. Two human children fell upon a fairy funeral in the woods, according to one of these legends, and this is how corgis became domesticated. The mourning fairies presented the children with two corgi puppies. The line of coarser fur at the base of the corgi’s haunches is a remnant of the fairies’ use of the animals as war horses.
