International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2019: Theme, Significance of the day

Every year, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed on June 26 to raise awareness about drug abuse and illegal drug trade. This day is being marked since 1989.

The day observed by the UN was established by General Assembly Resolution 42/112 on December 7, 1987. As per the UN, this day is an expression of its determination to strengthen action cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

The theme for International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking this year is ‘Health for justice. Justice for Health’. According to the UN, the theme aims at integrated nature of the rights and health-based approaches which are both highlighted in this ministerial declaration.

This day shows the issue of illicit drugs present in the society and how individuals, communities and various organization all over the world can come together to sweep it out.

On this day various events are held making people aware of drug abuse and increasing problems lieu of drugs. This year a World Drug Report will be launched by UN at United Nation Secretariat in New York.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime supports the member states in implementing solutions to the world drug problems guided by human rights and international drug control framework.

It involves various aspects that include treatment, support, and rehabilitation. It also ensures access to controlled substances for medical purposes, works with farmers who have cultivated illicit drug crops and establishes a legal and institutional framework for drug control by using international conventions.
