The Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Thaawarchand Gehlot, announced the creation of an international standard sports stadium for the differently-abled people in Meghalaya. The stadium is said to be created ahead of the National Games 2022, which the state will host.

While speaking during the Samajik Adhikarita Shivir on October 25, 2018, the Minister shared his plans of setting up at least five such stadiums across the country. According to him, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, approached with the proposal, providing 50 acres of land for the same.

The stadium in the state will be made at a cost of about 200 crores. For the purpose, the Minister said that a Composite Regional Centre will be set up in Meghalaya.

Earlier this year, Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Minister of State(Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports, under the vertical, “Promotion of Sports among persons with disabilities”, announced support for athletes with disabilities. The vertical has a budget of 15 crores for each of the two years 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The northeastern state was chosen over four other states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgargh, Goa and Uttrakhand for hosting the National Games. Meghalaya will also become just the third state from the northeast(after Manipur and Assam) to host the national games.
