International Sun Day 2023: Date, History, Activities and Facts

International Sun Day 2023: International Sun Day is annually observed on May 3. Many people believe that the Sun began everything, but we can all agree that it provides light and heat to Earth. On Sun Day, we celebrate the solitary star that illuminates our planet, while also highlighting the immense energy potential that we have yet to fully realise. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter instituted this annual holiday in 1978 to promote solar energy as a viable and environmentally friendly energy source.

HISTORY OF SUN DAY

International Sun Day was created to advocate the use of more environmentally friendly energy. Solar energy is one of the safest eco-friendly energy sources; unlike fossil fuels, it does not pollute the environment and has no long-term adverse effects. It is relatively less expensive and can provide the same quantity of energy to power stations around the world.

Denis Hayes, an American environmentalist and proponent of solar energy, proposed Sun Day. As the coordinator of the first Earth Day, which took place on April 22, 1970, he rose to prominence. It was his notion to insert Sun Day after Earth Day. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the holiday, which quickly spread from the United States to the rest of the globe.

In 1994, National Sun Day became an international event, garnering the attention of 22 nations. The European Division of the International Solar Society promoted the event throughout Europe. In some countries, the holiday has been extended from a single day to a week, which begins on May 4 and is known as the Week of the Sun. On International Sun Day, numerous global events are conducted to promote the use of renewable and environmentally-beneficial solar energy sources. This vacation includes tours of solar-powered homes. Solar research and project organisations coordinate exhibitions, open days, meetings, and tournaments. In schools, students participate in solar-related initiatives and competitions.

China is currently the world leader in solar power, and will continue to lead with 208 GigaWatts by 2020, accounting for one-third of the world’s installed solar capacity, inspiring other nations in their efforts to preserve the environment by choosing renewable energy.
