iPhone 15 Pro: ISRO’s NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) satellite navigation system garnered notoriety when the Indian government urged smartphone manufacturers to switch from foreign GPS systems to NavIC, which could increase the price of smartphones. Consequently, Apple has added NavIC support to its most recent iPhone 15 Pro models.

What is NavIC?

ISRO’s NavIC is India’s regional satellite navigation system. It consists of seven satellites in orbit that operate in conjunction with ground stations. Standard Position Service (SPS) is for civilian users, while Restricted Service (RS) is for strategic users.

These services are available on both the L5 (1176.45 MHz) and S bands (2498.028 MHz). NavIC’s coverage area encompasses India and a region extending up to 1,500 kilometers beyond the country’s border. It became operational in India in 2018 and provides precise position and timing data over India and the neighboring regions.

iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max Support for NavIC

On September 12, Apple unveiled the newest version of the iPhone at its “Wonderlust” event. It comprises the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to Apple’s official website, only the Pro variants in the iPhone 15 lineup support the NavIC navigation system.

iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max Specifications and Features

The bodies of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models are made of Grade 5 titanium for increased durability and decreased weight. They feature Super Retina XDR displays measuring 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, as well as the narrowest bezels ever seen on an iPhone. The front is protected with a ceramic shield. In addition, Apple has ultimately abandoned the Lightning port, as the new iPhone 15 series features a USB Type-C port.

Apple has also introduced an action button, substituting the traditional mute switch for enhanced functionality. Both Pro variants are powered by the A17 Pro chipset and provide enhanced camera performance.
