ITR Filing Last Date: Despite the fact that the deadline for filing an income tax return (ITR) for the Financial Year 2022-2023 (Assessment Year 2023-24) was July 31, internet users have not stopped requesting that the Income Tax Department extend the deadline.

Since a couple of days ago, the hashtag “Extend ITR Deadline” has been trending on Twitter. This is likely due to the fact that a large number of taxpayers are having trouble filing their ITR. When trying to file their returns through the official income tax portal, users are either having trouble logging in or having trouble using some features of the portal.

People are pointing to the severe rains that has been occurring in different parts of the country as well as the technical issues that have been occurring with the ITR portal as the reasons why they will not be able to make the deadline of July 31.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has not yet issued a statement regarding the possibility of extending the deadline for filing the income tax return (ITR).

Do taxpayers who missed the deadline for submitting their ITRs have the option to submit their returns late?

The Individual Tax Return (ITR) can be submitted either online or on paper. Penalties of up to Rs 5,000 may be imposed for failing to file an ITR or filing it late. You are able to submit a delayed income tax return (ITR) even if you missed the deadline to file on July 31. The deadline for filing a belated income tax return is December 31. You still have time to file your tardy income tax return for the fiscal year 2022-2023 (assessment year 2023-24), provided that you pay the applicable penalties.
