Karwa Chauth 2019:Tihar jail women inmates line up at jail's beauty parlor to get ready for the festival

The festival of Karwa Chauth is being observed today and on this auspicious occasion, women inmates at the Tihar jail have queued up at the jail’s beauty parlor to get dressed for the festive celebration.

According to a media report, the inmates of the Tihar Jail, Asia’s biggest prison, were all excited for Karva Chauth as the festival is set to be marked with great zeal this time.

While married women across India and the world observe a day-long fast and celebrate the holy festival, female inmates of the jail are also set to mark the festival in a similar manner inside the jail premises.

The media report quotes prison authorities saying that a number of male inmates have expressed their desire to observe the Karwa Chauth fast this year. Also, more than 200 female inmates will observe the fast on Thursday.

The officials informed that most of the women inmates will be dressed up in traditional Indian attires as prison authorities have allowed them to get their wedding dresses and sarees from their homes. The report further adds that the main event of Karwa Chauth 2019 will be observed in Women’s Jail number 6.

For the very first time, a grand ceremony has been organized in the park area to break the fast after moonrise.
The report further informs that the female inmates will break their fast by seeing their husband’s photo. However, the sieve (Channi), which is generally used to look at the moon as per tradition, will not be allowed in the prison for security reasons.
Several unmarried and foreign inmates are also observing the fast. The report further adds that a Muslim woman inmate, who plays the role of Sita in the prison’s Ramleela, has decided to observe the Karwa Chauth fast this year.
