Terrorists opened fire on 46 Rashtriya Rifles army camp in Baramulla district of north Kashmir late night on Sunday. In the ambush, one BSF jawan lost his life while three were injured in the exchange of fire that continued for hours.

The camp where the ‘Fidayeens’ (suicide) attacked is located on the outskirts of Baramulla city, 54 kms from Srinagar. Their breach was foiled by the BSF and the Northern Command of Indian Army said in a tweet that the situation at Baramulla was contained and under control. According to the officials, the terrorists were believed to have entered the establishment through the adjacent BSF camp but were not able to breach the 46 Rashtriya Rifles camp. Heavy exchange of fire broke out in the region.

In the middle of the night, said sources, (NDTV) it was difficult to ascertain whether the terrorists, believed to be about three to four in number, may have fled. A search and cordon operation is now on in the area to secure it.

Indian Express sources claimed that that there was some firing from adjacent houses located near the camp. The residents living close by to the camp switched off all their lights out of fear.

This attack comes four days after the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian army across LoC and it also follows intelligence inputs about possible terrorist attacks on security installations in Jammu and Kashmir. Almost a fortnight ago, terrorists had attacked army’s brigade headquarters at Uri which left 19 soldiers dead.

According to local sources (India TV)  at least two terrorists have been neutralized in the operation, initial reports say. One of the terrorist who had bullet wounds jumped into Jhelum river. Massive search operation is underway along the banks of the river.
