Kerala ragging case: 5 students surrender, victim hospitalised

Five senior college students accussed of ragging junior students at a government polytechnic college in Nattakam in Kottayam district, in Kerala, have surrendered before Kerala Police. The students will be produced before court on Monday.

Earlier a student has been admitted to a hospital in Thrissur, where he was been diagnosed with serious kidney damage. The student, named Avinash, was allegedly asked to strip dance for hours and was forced to drink tainted liquor by the senior students. The student had to undergo dialysis.

According to the police, three more students will be arrested in the case. The alleged culprits arrived at the DYSP office along with their parents and lawyer to surrender.

Former Chief Minister Oomen Chandy visited Avinash and urged government to bear the medical expenses for the student.

Meanwhile, another student from Ernakulam has also filed a police compliant against the seniors. Shaiju D Gopi, in his complaint, stated that he and other junior students including Avinash were forced by senior students at the boys hostel to do 50-puh ups and 100 sit-ups, The News Minute reported.
